DIY vs Contractor

The do it yourself community is one that is always growing. People like Johanna Gaines  propel both the home decor and DIY mindset.  With the internet, many people have been able to learn and master many DIY skills.

For many homeowners, the thought of DIY often comes to mind when home projects need doing. The thought of saving money propels many people to attempt DIY projects. But when should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a contractor has many advantages. The first advantage of hiring a contractor is that the contractors will do things up to code. They will also get any paperwork or permits necessary to complete the job. Contractors finish in a timely manner and have the necessary tools to complete the job.  There is nothing wrong with wanting to do it yourself, however it is good to know your limits. Hiring a contractor significantly reduces the chances of getting injured at home.

It is estimated that approximately 20,000 injuries occur each year due to people DIYing. These injuries can be falling from ladders, getting cut, or getting injured from using a tool improperly. Improper wiring can cause house fires or even death.  Professionals know several ways to do things safely and can accurately asses the needs of the project.

It is important to know your limits and what range of DIY you are capable of preforming . Things like painting and decorating don't have a high risk of injury.  When hanging pictures, or shelves, make sure to use the proper anchors rated for the weight. Things like electrical work, hanging dry wall , and working on the HVAC unit usually require a professional depending on the task.

Things like new coats of paint, new floors and other such items can boost the price of the house for sale.  Bathroom renovations are another huge selling point in the current market. Take the time to look at your house and create a list of what you would like to have done. This can help you identify what you are capable of doing, and what tasks will  need a contractor.
