Every home has gutters and down spouts on them and this allows for proper water management and drainage. But, often times the gutters are neglected when it comes to routine maintenance. Maintenance involves keeping the gutters clean, properly attached, and making sure they drain properly. Water can do a significant amount of damage in a short time. It can erode the foundation creating large cracks and much greater problems down the line.
If a gutter is clogged it can reroute the water to the lowest point. That means that water can be draining underneath your roof or even into your walls. When this happens the water damage can cause mold spores to form. A clogged gutter can also become so heavy that it detaches from the house causing more damage.
Simple routine maintenance can prevent numerous problems.
It is said that gutters should be cleaned every 3-6 months depending on your area. This is one task of home maintenance where it is recommended to hire a professional as they will have the ability to properly clean and repair the gutters as needed. Gutters that are well maintained can boost property value. It is in similar to new siding and is a great selling point.
Hopefully this article serves as a reminder to look into an aspect of your home that may have been forgotten. Especially with the fall quickly approaching, it is best to begin preventative maintenance now before the gutters are in their busy season.
